Functional Limitations

Hand Use

Potential problems:   Weak, shaky or clumsy hands

Examples:  Can't press small buttons on a telephone or signaling device.

Reaching/Lifting

Potential problems:  Weak, shaky or inflexible arms

Examples:  Unable to hold telephone receiver.

Hearing

Potential problems:  Poor hearing or deafness

Examples:  Unable to discuss food selection  with a waiter in a restaurant.  Unable to hear cues to go to next activity.

Speech

Potential problems:  Unable to say words

Examples:  Can't verbally express needs and interests to store clerks.  Can't indicate basic needs (i.e., need to use a bathroom).

Memory/Organization

Potential problems:  Poor memory, confusion

Examples:  Gets confused about how to use a telephone.  Needs reminders to use the bathroom.

Vision

Potential problems:  Poor vision or blindness

Examples:  Can't see pictures or symbols on communication device.  Can't read a menu.

Mobility/Balance

Potential problems:  Unsteady or unable to walk or stand

Examples:  Limited ability to walk or stand generally does not affect a person's ability to communicate.
