Functional Limitations

Hand Use

Potential problems:  Weak, shaky or clumsy hands

Examples:  Difficulty holding and manipulating standard utensils.  Unable to cut, chop, pour, turn or spread ingredients.

Reaching/Lifting

Potential problems:  Weak, shaky or inflexible arms

Examples:  Difficulty pouring ingredients into a bowl.  Unable to reach for ingredients from overhead cabinets.

Hearing

Potential problems: Poor hearing or deafness 

Examples:  Unable to hear a kitchen timer.  Difficulty asking for assistance in a grocery store.

Speech

Potential problems: Unable to say words

Examples:  Difficulty asking for assistance in a grocery store.

Memory/Organization

Potential problems:  Poor memory, confusion

Examples:  Unable to follow the steps of a written recipe.  Difficulty remembering which utensils to use for measuring and pouring.  Unsafe around a hot stove.

Vision

Potential problems:  Poor vision or blindness

Examples:  Difficulty seeing and choosing the correct measuring spoon.

Mobility/Balance

Potential problems:  Unsteady or unable to walk or stand.

Examples:  Unable to safely carry food between preparation and eating areas.  Difficulty working at standard kitchen counters.
