Functional Limitations

Hand Use

Potential problems:  Weak, shaky or clumsy hands

Examples:  Can't press the buttons on a stereo or a standard remote control. Can't manipulate a light switch.

Reaching/Lifting

Potential problems:  Weak, shaky or inflexible arms

Examples:  Can't reach a light switch on a wall or lamp.  Can't hold a telephone receiver when dialing.

Hearing

Potential problems:  Poor hearing or deafness

Examples:  Can't hear alarms/signals such as the doorbell or an alarm clock.

Speech

Potential problems:  Unable to say words

Examples:  Limited speech alone generally does not affect a person's ability to control their environment.

Memory/Organization

Potential problems:  Poor memory, confusion

Examples:  Confused about how to operate a VCR remote control.  Can't remember how to turn on-off a fan.  Can't remember telephone numbers.

Vision

Potential problems:  Poor vision or blindness

Examples:  Can't distinguish the buttons on a TV remote control.  Can't see a light switch.

Mobility/Balance

Potential problems:  Unsteady or unable to walk or stand

Examples:  Can't open/close doors.  Can't reach light switch on a  wall.
