Functional Limitations

Hand Use

Potential problems:  Weak shaky or clumsy hands

Examples:  Unable to manipulate a zipper pull. Difficulty holding a toothbrush or hairbrush.

Reaching/Lifting

Potential problems:  Weak, shaky or inflexible arms

Examples:  Unable to clean a kitchen table and bathtub.

Hearing

Potential problems:  Poor hearing or deafness

Examples:  Limited hearing alone does not affect a person's ability to perform self care activities.

Speech

Potential problems:  Unable to say words

Examples:  Limited speech generally does not affect a person's ability to perform self care activities

Memory/Organization

Potential problems:  Poor memory, confusion

Examples:  Unable to do multi-step, self care activities such as tying shoes, brushing teeth and taking a shower.  Can't remember to tie shoes or to take medications.

Vision

Potential problems:  Poor vision or blindness

Examples:  Can't distinguish between various bathing soaps and lotions. Can't use standard timers or alarm clocks.

Mobility/Balance

Potential problems:  Unsteady or unable to walk or stand

Examples:  Difficulty cleaning the bathroom.  Difficulty getting dressed.
